Independent Suspension

Image
Independent Suspension An independent suspension is engineered so that one wheel can move up or down without affecting the motion of the other wheel on that axle. This helps improve the car's handling. Independent suspension is a broad term for any automobile suspension system that allows each wheel on the same axle to move vertically (i.e. reacting to a bump in the road) independently of each other. This is contrasted with a beam axle , live axle or deDion axle system in which the wheels are linked–movement on one side affects the wheel on the other side. Note that “independent” refers to the motion or path of movement of the wheels/suspension. It is common for the left and right sides of the suspension to be connected with anti-roll bars or other such mechanisms.  The anti-roll bar ties the left and right suspension spring rates together but does not tie their motion together. Most modern vehicles have independent front suspension (IFS). Many vehicles also have an independen

What Would an Interstellar Mission Look Like?

Image
Project Icarus is an ambitious five-year study into launching an unmanned spacecraft to an interstellar destination. Headed by the Tau Zero Foundation, a non-profit group of scientists dedicated to interstellar spaceflight, Icarus is working to develop a spacecraft that can travel to a nearby star. Dr. Robert Adams, study lead in the Advanced Concepts Office at the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center and Lead Designer for the Mission Analysis and Performance Module for Project Icarus, explains the realities behind getting an interstellar spacecraft to its destination. WIDE ANGLE: Project Icarus : Reaching for Interstellar Space One critical feature of any interstellar voyage is the "mission analysis," which organizes science objectives, plots movement through space and determines abort and correction scenarios. Some refer to this effort as "trajectory analysis" or "astrodynamics" but it encompasses more than simply plotting a path through the heavens. Com

Internet Business Chart We went to the library this week with one goal in mind: Check out a copy of The Divine Comedy so that we could read it and feel intellectually, nay, morally superior to anyone playing Dante’s Inferno. We sort of felt conflicted about making fun of it, since we’d never read the source material, either. Well, the library only had one copy, and it was checked out. So all we have to offer you is Dante’s Internet, from No Cats on the Blog. Many points for the nods to Godwin’s law and Shepard Book ’s special hell. Click for a bigger version in the NCotB post, where you can read all them fiddly writin’s.
