SHAKUNTALA DEVI is no more

Image
1977. Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas World recognized mathematician Shakuntala Devi calculated the 23rd root of a 201 digit number within 50 seconds while the UNIVAC Supercomputer took more than a minute to calculate the same.  Born in 1939 in a poor family in Bangalore (India), she dropped out of school because her parents could not afford the monthly fee of Rs 2 for school.  She grew up in a slum and by the age of 3, her father discovered her strong mathematical abilities. As the word about her abilities spread around the town, she started demonstrating and by the age of 6, even reputed Universities started inviting her to demonstrate her mathematical magic. After this 1977 record at Dallas, she went on to create more records including one in 1980 where she solved multiplication of two 13 digit randomly picked numbers in just 28 seconds and entered the Guinness Book of World Records. Not only was she a genius & mathematical magician but she played a great r

Swiss company aims to fly satellites into space

Image
If you want to launch a satellite in the usual way – on top of a rocket – it will typically cost you at least US$50,000,000. Newly inaugurated aerospace firm Swiss Space Systems (S3), however, claims that it will be able to put your small satellite into orbit for about 10.6 million bucks. S3 is planning on flying satellites into space, using an airliner and an unmanned shuttle..

satillate detects earth quakes from space

GOCE becomes first satellite to detect an earthquake from space... The European Space Agency’s Gravity Field and Steady-State Ocean Circulation Explorer (GOCE) satellite was launched on March 17, 2009, as the first of a series of Earth Explorer satellites. Its mission is to capture high-resolution gravity measurements and produce an accurate gravity map – or geoid – of Earth. To increase the resolution of its measurements, GOCE was put into an unusually low orbit, which has also helped it to become the first satellite to sense sound waves from an earthquake from space.

Magnetic Trains

Image
The principal of a Magnet train is that floats on a magnetic field and is propelled by a linear induction motor. They follow guidance tracks with magnets. These trains are often refered to as Magnetically Levitated trains which is abbreviated to MagLev. Although maglevs don't use steel wheel on steel rail usually associated with trains, the dictionary definition of a train is a long line of vehicles travelling in the same direction - it is a train. HOW IT WORKS: A maglev train floats about 10mm above the guidway on a magnetic field. It is propelled by the guidway itself rather than an onboard engine by changing magnetic fields (see right). Once the train is pulled into the next section the magnetism switches so that the train is pulled on again. The Electro-magnets run the length of the guideway. ADVANTAGES: Well it sounds high-tech, a floating train, they do offer certain benefits over conventional steel rail on steel wheel railways. The primary advantage is mainta

Blood Cured the Disease......and saved 2,000,000 lives

Image
After needing 13 liters of blood for a surgery at the age of 13, a man named James Harrison pledged to donate blood once he turned 18. It was discovered that his blood contained a rare antigen which cured Rhesus disease. He has donated blood a record 1,000 times and saved 2,000,000 lives.

Difference between Red Grapes and Green Grapes ?

Image
Difference between Red Grapes and Green Grapes ? • Antioxidants are found in high contents, in red grapes , and only a little of antioxidants are found in green grapes . • Green grapes contain slightly high amount of calories than the amount of calories in red grapes . • Red grapes contain high amounts of anthocyanins and green grapes lack anthocyanins. • Red grapes contain flavanoid antioxidants like Resveratrol, Catechins and Quercetin and green grapes contain only Catechins in small amounts. • Red grapes can lower the high blood pressures whereas the green grapes cannot. • Red grapes are important in prevention of heart related disorders and protecting good cholesterol but green grapes cannot. • Resveratrol in red grapes can help in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease whereas the green grapes cannot. • Resveratrol in red grapes has antifungal and anti-cancer properties whereas green grapes do not have. • Anti-histamine properties in Quercetin, in red grapes , are required

Multicolored lighting CAVE

A natural limestone cave with multicolored lighting The Reed Flute Cave is a landmark and tourist attraction in Guilin, Guangxi, China. It is a natural limestone cave with multicolored lighting and has been one of Guilin’s most interesting attractions for over 1200 years. It is over 180 million years old. The cave got its name from the type of reed growing outside, which can be made into melodious flutes. Reed Flute Cave is filled with a large number of stalactites, stalagmites and rock formations in weird and wonderful shapes. Inside, there are more than 70 inscriptions written in ink, which can be dated back as far as 792 AD in the Tang Dynasty. These aged inscriptions tell us that it has been an attraction in Guilin since ancient times. It was rediscovered in the 1940s by a group of refugees fleeing the Japanese troops.
