Every year thousands of people lose their lives in fire incidents.it is very important to take steps to prevent fire in our homes as well as institutional premises. Following are some safety tips to make your house a safe home:

1.       Fit smoke alarms on each level in your home. Keep them free from dust and test them once a week. Consider buying a 10 years alarm; otherwise change the batteries in your alarm every year.
2.       Make a fire action plan so that everyone in your home knows how to escape if there is a fire.
3.       Keep the exits from your home clear so that people can escape if there is a fire. Make sure that every in your home can easily find keys for doors and windows.
4.       Take extra care in the kitchen accidents while cooking account for over half of fires in homes. Never leave young children alone in kitchen.
5.       Take extra care when cooking with hot oil. Consider buying a deep fat fryer which is controlled by a thermostat [if you don’t already have one].
6.       Never leave lit candles in rooms where children are in secure holders on a surface that does not burn and are away from any materials that could burn.
7.       Make sure cigarettes are stubbed out properly, disposed of carefully and never smoke in bed.
8.       Get into the habit of closing doors at night. If you want to keep a child’s bedroom door open, close the doors to the lounge and kitchen, it may well help save their life if there is a fire.
9.       Don’t overload electrical sockets. Remember one plug for one socket.
10.   Keep matches and lighters where children cannot see or reach them.
11.   Take special care when you are tired.
12.   Don’t leave the T.V or other electrical appliances on standby as this could cause a fire. Always switch it off and unplug when not in use.

What to do in case of fire,

·         If you see smoke or flames, raise the alarm. Alert everyone. Make sure everyone in your home knows about the fire.
·         Get out of the building as soon as possible. Remember, every second counts.
·         Get straight out. Don’t waste time looking for valuable or favorite items, getting dressed or even looking for pet. Don’t investigate the fire.
·         Don’t open doors. Only open the doors you need to get through. Fires need air to burn, and closed doors slow them down giving you more time to get out.
·         Find a phone and call 101. Ask for the fire and Rescue service, and then give your address slowly and calmly. You may need to go to the neighbors to find a phone.
·         Don’t go back into the building not for toys or even pets. Fire fighters can search the house much more quickly than you can.
·         If there’s smoke crawl along the floor as the air is cleanest there.
·         If your escape route is blocked, go into a room with a window, put things round the door to stop smoke getting in, open the window and call for help.
·          Never hide in a cupboard or under a bed. You need to raise the alarm and get out.
